Bank Indonesia (BI) continues to expand the digital payment network through the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) cross border. BI announced that the cross-border QRIS payment feature can be used by Indonesian citizens in Japan and China starting August 17, 2025.

Quoted from kompas, preparation for QRIS cooperation with Japan has reached the sandbox stage after going through a number of technical steps with the Japanese payment system authority since mid-May 2025. This was revealed by BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta in a press conference on the results of the BI Board of Governors Meeting in Jakarta, Wednesday, May 21, 2025. In the future, Indonesians who go to Japan can use QR scan payments in Japan.

Not only Japan, the development of cross-border QRIS with China has also shown a significant process. According to Filianingsih, the finalization of business, technical, and operational aspects has been agreed upon by Union Pay International from the Chinese side and the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI). Four national switching service providers, namely PT Rintis Sejahtera (Rintis), PT Alto Network (Alto), PT Artajasa Pembayaran Elektronis (Artajasa), and PT Jalin Pembayaran Nusantara (Jalin) have also entered into an agreement with Union Pay International for system development and sandbox trial implementation.
